Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in Newburyport, MA
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
At TruWellness, we offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), a non-invasive session that uses increased atmospheric pressure to boost oxygen delivery to your cells and tissues. You rest in a pressurized chamber while breathing concentrated oxygen. HBOT here is a wellness and recovery service, and a provider screens every client first.

How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy work?
Normally, the oxygen you breathe is carried to your tissues by red blood cells. In a hyperbaric chamber, the higher pressure lets more oxygen dissolve directly into your blood plasma, so your lungs take in more oxygen than they could at normal air pressure. Oxygen is fundamental to the energy-producing processes inside every cell.
HBOT is a secure and non-invasive treatment method. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves breathing 100% oxygen in a pressurized chamber, where the air pressure is increased to 1.5 to 3 times higher than normal. The oxygen-rich blood then circulates throughout the body, promoting healing and fighting infection. This transformative process significantly amplifies the volume of oxygen carried to our tissues, thereby intensifying oxygen absorption into our cells.
8 benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Enhanced Healing: HBOT can accelerate the body’s natural healing processes, making it valuable for wound healing, tissue repair, and post-surgery recovery.
- Improved Oxygen Supply: It increases oxygen supply to cells and tissues, which is beneficial for individuals with conditions that result in poor oxygen circulation.
- Reduced Inflammation: HBOT can help reduce inflammation and swelling, which is useful for conditions involving inflammation, such as arthritis and sports injuries.
- Brain Function: It may enhance brain function and cognitive performance by delivering more oxygen to the brain, potentially aiding in conditions like stroke recovery and traumatic brain injuries.
- Infection Control: HBOT can assist in fighting certain infections, especially those caused by anaerobic bacteria that thrive in low-oxygen environments.
- Pain Management: It may alleviate chronic pain conditions, including complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), fibromyalgia, and migraines.
- Improved Immune Response: HBOT may boost the immune system by increasing white blood cell production, aiding in the body’s ability to fight infections.
- Tissue Preservation: In cases of ischemia or reduced blood flow, such as in some forms of vascular disease, HBOT can help preserve at-risk tissues by providing them with sufficient oxygen.

The Science Behind HBOT
Faster recovery after hard training
In a 2024 study of male university athletes, 60-minute HBOT sessions after hard cycling were linked to lower perceived fatigue and faster heart-rate recovery than resting. After six daily sessions, blood markers of muscle damage and oxidative stress also recovered faster.[3] HBOT may support recovery from hard training.
Less fatigue after intense exercise
In a 2022 study of healthy men, 60 minutes of HBOT after intense cycling was linked to lower fatigue, tension and overall mood-disturbance scores than resting without HBOT.[4] HBOT may help you feel recovered sooner after a hard session.
Lower resting heart rate, better heart rate variability
In a 2025 study of healthy young men, a single 60-minute session lowered resting heart rate and improved short-term heart rate variability, a marker linked to the “rest and recover” nervous system.[2] HBOT may help your body shift into recovery mode.
Improved oxygen supply through tiny blood vessels
In a 2022 study of healthy adults, a 70-minute session increased blood flow in the tiny blood vessels of the fingertips, along with a lower heart rate and higher heart rate variability.[5] HBOT may support healthy circulation.
Better sleep quality
In a 2026 study of male athletes, six daily sessions after hard cycling were linked to better self-reported sleep quality than resting without HBOT.[6] This study came from the same research group and design as the fatigue study above.
What can I expect during an HBOT session?
- Consult and screeningA TruWellness provider reviews your health history, medications and goals to make sure HBOT is safe for you.
- Get settledWear comfortable clothes and follow the team’s safety checklist for what can and cannot go in the chamber.

How many sessions will I need?
Results vary from person to person, depending on your goals and overall health. Multiple sessions may be needed, and our team will work with you on a personalized plan. In one study, recovery effects were stronger after six daily sessions than after one.[3]
What can I expect from the results?
Patients often report:
- Accelerated Healing: Faster recovery times for wounds and injuries.
- Pain Reduction: Decreased discomfort in affected areas.
- Improved Function: Enhanced mobility and function in previously impaired tissues.
- Better Quality of Life: Overall improvements in well-being and daily functioning.

How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy work?
The higher pressure in the chamber lets more oxygen dissolve directly into your blood plasma, so more oxygen can reach your tissues than when breathing at normal air pressure.
Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy safe?
For screened adults, HBOT is generally well tolerated. The most common side effect is ear pressure or ear discomfort as the chamber pressurizes; sinus pressure, temporary vision changes and, rarely, more serious lung or oxygen-related problems can occur.[7] Because oxygen raises fire risk, chambers must be used exactly as the manufacturer directs.[8] A TruWellness provider reviews your health history before your first session.
Can HBOT help with recovery after workouts?
It may. In studies of healthy men and athletes, sessions after hard exercise were linked to lower perceived fatigue, faster heart-rate recovery and better mood scores than resting without HBOT.[3][4] Individual results vary. HBOT is one part of a TruPerformance recovery plan, not a replacement for sleep, nutrition and training.
How many HBOT sessions will I need?
Results vary, and multiple sessions may be needed. In one study, the recovery effects were stronger after six daily sessions than after one.[3] Your provider will suggest a plan based on your goals and how you respond.
Does HBOT hurt? What about ear pressure?
It should not hurt. Most people feel fullness in their ears, similar to an airplane descent, as pressure builds. Swallowing, yawning or gently equalizing usually relieves it. Tell the team right away if you feel ear or sinus pain.[7]
How long is an HBOT session?
Session length varies by plan. Ask our team for current session times when you book.
What should I wear to HBOT?
Wear comfortable, loose clothing. Our team will give you safety instructions before your first session, including which items, products and devices cannot go into the chamber.
Who should not use HBOT?
HBOT is not right for everyone. A provider screens for conditions that can make it unsafe, such as certain lung conditions (for example a past collapsed lung or significant lung disease), recent ear or sinus surgery or an active cold or sinus congestion, pregnancy, and some medications and implanted devices.[7]
How much does HBOT cost in Newburyport?
A single session is $109. Packs are $379 (new-client 5-pack), $429 (5-pack), $649 (10-pack) and $749 (15-pack), and HBOT Unlimited is $799/month for one session per day with a 3-month minimum (offer ends Nov 30, 2026; only 3 memberships). Financing options such as CareCredit are available for eligible treatments.
Does insurance cover HBOT?
Insurance typically covers HBOT only for specific FDA-cleared medical indications treated in qualifying facilities.[1] Wellness and recovery sessions are generally self-pay. Check with your insurer.
