What is functional medicine at TruWellness?
Functional medicine is a root-cause, whole-body approach to care. Instead of treating each symptom on its own, we look at how your hormones, metabolism, nutrition, sleep, stress and activity connect, then use testing to guide a plan built for you.
Many people come to us after months or years of feeling tired, foggy or “not themselves,” even though a standard checkup came back fine. Functional medicine takes a wider view. We spend time on your history and goals, look at your body as one connected system, and use advanced testing to look for what may be holding you back.
Care is led by our medical director, Dr. Mark Su, MD, FAAFP, a board-certified family physician whose clinical interest focuses on the causes of chronic inflammation. Functional medicine at TruWellness works alongside your primary care provider, not in place of them.

Who is functional medicine for?
Adults who want answers and a clear plan, especially if something feels off and you haven’t found the reason, or you want to be proactive about how you age.
- Low energy or fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest.
- Weight that won’t budge despite real effort with food and exercise.
- Possible hormone changes, such as perimenopause, menopause or low testosterone.
- Brain fog, poor sleep or stress that gets in the way of your day.
- Nutrition and digestion questions you want looked at as part of the bigger picture.
- Prevention and longevity goals: you feel fine and want to stay that way.
Functional medicine is not emergency care. If you have new, severe or sudden symptoms, contact your primary care provider, or call 911 in an emergency.
What can a functional medicine plan include?
Your plan draws on the testing and treatments we offer in-house, chosen for your results and goals. Not everyone needs every service.

Advanced testing, including biological age, heart and metabolic health and fitness, turned into a personal longevity plan.

IV therapy
Customized IV drips with fluids, vitamins and nutrients, given by our licensed clinical team.

Functional medicine: common questions
What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a root-cause, whole-body approach to health. At TruWellness in Newburyport, MA, it means a physician-led team looks at how your hormones, metabolism, nutrition, sleep, stress and activity connect, uses testing to understand what is going on, and builds one personalized plan.
How is functional medicine different from a regular checkup?
A routine checkup focuses on standard screenings. Functional medicine spends more time on your history and goals, adds testing when it is appropriate, and connects the results into one plan. It works alongside your primary care provider, not in place of them.
What tests might be included?
It depends on you. Testing can include advanced blood work, hormone testing, biological age testing through AgeWell, a Seca® body composition scan and PNOE® VO2 max and RMR testing. Your provider recommends only the tests that fit your goals.
Do you offer hormone therapy and GLP-1 medications?
Yes, when they are right for you. Hormone care, including testosterone therapy (TRT) and menopause hormone therapy (HRT), is provided through TruVitality after lab testing. Medical weight loss through TruTrim can include all FDA-approved GLP-1 medications.
How much does a functional medicine consultation cost?
A medical consultation at TruWellness is $200. The cost of testing and treatment depends on what your plan includes, and your provider will go over it with you.
Who provides functional medicine care at TruWellness?
