What is Botox®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved prescription injectable that temporarily relaxes the muscles behind expression lines. It has been FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002, longer than any other wrinkle relaxer.
- Softens lines caused by movement, like frowning and squinting
- Quick appointment, little to no downtime
- Dosed by unit, so your plan fits your face
What areas can Botox® treat?
Frown lines (the 11s)
The vertical lines between your brows.
Crow’s feet
The lines at the outer corners of your eyes.
Forehead lines
The horizontal lines across your forehead.
Neck bands
Vertical platysma bands on the neck.
Our injectors may also discuss other areas, such as a lip flip, gummy smile, bunny lines, brow lift or jaw (masseter) treatment, at your consultation.
How is Botox® different from Dysport® and Daxxify®?
Botox®
The longest track record and the most FDA-approved cosmetic areas. Results typically last 3 to 4 months.
May start working a little sooner and spreads a bit more, which can suit larger areas like the forehead.
A peptide-based formula with no human or animal proteins. In clinical trials, results lasted longer for many patients.
Units are not interchangeable between brands, so a Dysport® or Daxxify® treatment uses a different number of units than Botox®. Compare them side by side on our neurotoxin overview.
What happens at a Botox® appointment?
Most appointments take 10 to 20 minutes, and most people go right back to their day.
- Consult firstYour injector looks at how your face moves, talks through your goals and sets your unit count.
- ComfortNo anesthesia is needed. A topical numbing cream or ice may be offered.
- Precise injectionsA fine needle places small amounts into specific muscles. Most people describe a brief pinch.
- Back to your dayMinor redness or swelling can happen and usually fades quickly. Your injector will share aftercare tips.
